The 2019 season was one of extreme highs and lows for the Leclaire (Link!) Racing Team. In May 2019, The Spring Classic at Le Circuit Tremblant, On the opening Saturday, I raced in the rain for the first time, it was an incredible experience. Unfortunately, a head gasket kept me from racing on Sunday, but the anticipation was high for the next event.
Three weeks later we were at Mosport for the Vintage Grand Prix, Lots and lots of cars on an amazing track, I loved every moment of it, even finishing on the podium with a second-place finish in my class. What a weekend!!!
Fast forwarding to the Fall classic at Tremblant, this was a much different story. We arrived on the Friday morning for practice and worked hard to tie up a few loose ends and go out for morning practice. Within a few moments, I saw that the oil pressure had crashed on the first lap and “that’s all she wrote”. I had to get the car towed in and we determined that I’ve spun a bearing, so without a replacement engine on hand, the weekend was over. What’s that saying when we hear of F1 interviews after a breakdown or crash on the first lap? “That’s Racing!”
The next event, the Spring Classic at Le Circuit at Tremblant, was planned to be in the spring of 2020, and with a rebuilt engine with a new block with a slightly offset bore was purring like a tiger! I used an offset bore to reduce the chance of blowing another head gasket, as my engine is a 1950 big bore motor and is bored out to the max. The anticipation was at maximum! This all came down to earth with a bump as the race is cancelled due to the pandemic, and Mosport is quickly cancelled after that. I was not sure we were going to race at all this year.
As it turns out we got to Tremblant in late September for the Fall Classic. It’s always a fantastic time of the year in the Laurentians and this year was no exception. Beautiful weather all around, with a car that was running strong with no issues. (imagine that!)
. Sadly, there were no spectators this year, but it was great to get my crew out with me, including my dad, my son Thomas and as always, my trusty crew chief Bryan Vajda, and my dear brother in-law. I know the weekend put a big smile on the Capitaine’s face that still hasn’t subsided.
La saison en revue avec Jody Leclaire
La saison 2019 a été marquée par des hauts et des bas pour l'équipe de course de Leclaire (Link !). En mai 2019, le Classique de printemps au Circuit Tremblant, le samedi d'ouverture, j'ai couru sous la pluie pour la première fois. C'était une expérience incroyable. Malheureusement, un joint de culasse m'a empêché de courser le dimanche, mais l'attente était grande pour le prochain événement.
Trois semaines plus tard, nous étions à Mosport pour le Grand Prix Vintage, plusieurs voitures sur une piste incroyable, j'ai adoré chaque moment, dont celui où j'ai terminé sur le podium avec une deuxième place dans ma catégorie. Quel week-end !!!
Le classique d'automne à Tremblant a était une toute autre histoire. Nous sommes arrivés le vendredi matin pour les sessions de pratique et nous avons travaillé fort pour régler quelques détails et sortir pour la pratique du matin. En quelques instants, dès le premier tour, j'ai vu que la pression d'huile s'était effondrée et c’était "final bâton". J'ai dû faire remorquer la voiture et nous avons déterminé que j'avais filé un roulement, donc sans moteur de rechange sous la main, le week-end était terminé. C’est quoi déjà l’expression qu’on entend lors d’entrevue en F1 après une panne ou un accident au premier tour? "C'est ça la course !"
Le prochain événement, le Classique de printemps au Circuit de Tremblant, devait avoir lieu au printemps 2020 et mon moteur reconstruit avec un nouveau bloc avec un alésage légèrement décalé, ronronnait comme un tigre ! J'ai utilisé un alésage décalé pour réduire le risque de faire sauter un autre joint de culasse, car mon moteur est un gros alésage de 1950 et il est alésé au maximum. L'anticipation était à son maximum !
Mais tout s’est effondré rapidement, la course étant annulée en raison de la pandémie, Mosport étant rapidement annulé par la suite. Je n'étais pas du tout certain que nous allions courser cette année.
Il se trouve que nous sommes arrivés à Tremblant fin septembre pour le Classique d'automne. C'est toujours une période de l'année fantastique dans les Laurentides et cette année n'a pas fait exception. Le temps était magnifique, avec une voiture qui roulait bien sans problème (imaginez ça !)
Malheureusement, il n'y avait pas de spectateurs cette année, mais c'était super de faire sortir mon équipage avec moi, y compris mon père, mon fils Thomas et, comme toujours, mon fidèle chef d'équipe Bryan Vajda, et mon cher beau-frère. Je sais que le week-end a mis un grand sourire sur le visage du Capitaine, sourire qui ne s'est toujours pas effacé.
