Date line June 19, 2022: Bill Smyth, Diana and I, he in his stellar MGB and she and I in our jet-black MGA MK II hooked up on a sunny Sunday morning in Hudson for the 420 KM drive to Peterborough for the NAMBGR convention In Peterborough. Navigating the back roads near St Polycarpe, we got caught in a detour loop to nowhere, so we scrapped our original route and headed down to the 20 to the 401 exiting at Cornwall to eventually catch secondary highway 43west to reach highway 7 in the quaint town of Perth, Ontario. Apart from the unexpected detour the drive was trouble free, no burning oil or backfires etc. Using our GPS system, we navigated our way to Peterborough and to the residences of Trent University where we would stay for the duration of the event. Diana and I stayed in room 502. Well, the room might as well have been located in Cell block Trent U, cell # 502. The room was so tiny, walls and floors of unpainted concrete with a small window. But theprice was right and the campus beautiful and a short drive from the host hotel. A few other members had also booked rooms there. We were kinda like inmates and Diana was my cellmate.The first NAMBGR convention was hosted in the vibrant city of Peterborough, Ontario in 1992 and the MG Car Club of Toronto stepped up to host the 30thanniversary, once again in Peterborough. At the host hotel, the Holiday Inn-Waterfront, strategically located by the quaint Otanobee river, we all enjoyed the parking lot party,BBQ, the tech sessions and the self-directed drives culminating with the car show located at shady Nicholls Park and followed by the awards banquet at the hotel. Fellow MMGCC member Duncan Taylor was awarded first place in the 1973-1976 MG GT V8 category and he also was awarded best in show. Congratulations Duncan! Indeed, a proud moment for our club. And, among some very stiff competition, my ’62 MGA MK II black beauty, was awarded 3rdplace in the MGA Category. Wouldn’t you agree the MMGCC was very well represented at this convention which drew cars for all over North America?Duncan and I were also very lucky as we both got to spend some quality time with the renowned John Twist of University Motors.Alas, the trip was not without incident. On the Tuesday Bill, Diana and I, Ian Worsnip, Arthur Hakoyan and Susan Belanger headed off to petroglyphs park north of Peterborough where there is the largest known concentration of Indigenous rock carvings (petroglyphs) in Canada, depicting turtles, snakes, birds, humans and more. We never made it! 20 minutes into the drive my car broke down. I pulled up lame near a farm house and luckily the farmer and his wife came to see us and offered up some water and the chance to use their bathroom. We pulled our chairs fromthe trunk found some shade under a tree in their front yard and chatted while Ian, Arthur and I tinkered with the car... Arthur had a spare fuel pump and replaced the one in the car ... no start! We could not determine the problem so I had it to towed (thank God for CAA) to a garage I had found in the NAMGBR service guidebook in Lindsay some 45 minutes away. Charlie the mechanic did not have any parts for the car!!!. The next day Ian, I, Arthur and Bill drove the scenic way to Lindsay. Thankfully Ian had acomplete set of ignition componentswhich we handed off to Charlie and then we drove into Lindsay and found a pub for some well-deserved cold ones. A couple of hours later we went back to the garage...problem still not solved. We face-timed my friend and favourite MG guy, Joe Sfeir who guided Charlie on how to correctly install the set of points. Mission accomplished... thank you, Joe! We then headed back to Peterborough. Isn’t it great to have MG buddies!The morning after the awards banquet Diana and I followed Duncan and Natalie who were in in their big rig towing their gold (bracken) prize winning machine back to Hudson. We made it home incident free and safely... Thank you to all MG friends who we enjoyed our time with in Peterborough and to those who helped us out of a jam!!Philip Habib5
Fall 2022 / Automne2022Échéance: 19 juin 2002 –En route vers la convention NAMBGRÉchéance : 19 juin 2022. Bill Smyth, Diana et moi-même, Bill dans son immaculée MGB et nous deux dans notre MGA MKII noir intense, nous rejoignons par un beau dimanche matin ensoleillé à Hudson pour notre ballade de 420 km vers Peterborough pour la Convention NAMBGR. Alors que nous étions sur les routes secondaires près de St-Polycarpe, un détour inattendu nous a fait dévié de notre plan original et nous avons donc pris la A-20 jusqu’à la sortie de Cornwall sur la A-401.Nous nous dirigeâmes vers la route secondaire 43 pour rejoindre la 7 nous menant à Perth, Ontario. À part ce détour, le trajet fut sans histoire, sans huile qui brûle, et cie... Nous avons rejoint Peterborough et les résidences de l’université Trent grâce au GPS, lieu de notre séjour. Diana et moi logions au no 502, qui, franchement, aurait aussi bien pu se qualifier de cellule no 502, bloc UTrent, tant la chambre était petite, avec un plancher de ciment non peint et sa petite fenêtre. Mai elle était raisonnable et le campus, superbe, et tout près de l’hôtel de la convention. D’autres membres y étaient aussi, nous étions comme des prisonniers et Diana, ma co-locataire.C’est en 1992 qu’eût lieu la première convention NAMBGR à Peterborough, Ontario, et 30 ans plus tard, le club MG de Toronto en fut l’organisateur, dans la même ville. C’est au Holiday Inn-Waterfront, près de la belle rivière Otanabee, que se tenaient les activités, don’t le Tail Gate, un BBQ, les leçons techniques et les ballades, culminant avec le show de voitures du Parc Nicholset son banquet de remise de prix à l’hôtel. Notre membre Duncan Taylor eût droit à la première place dans la catégorie MG GT V8 1973-1976 en plus d’être élue meilleure voiture. Félicitations Duncan! Tout un moment pour le Club! Et, malgré une forte compétition, ma beauté noir jet MGA MKII 1962 reçue la 3e place dans la catégorie MGA. Quelle belle représentation pour notre Club lors de cette convention réunissant des voitures de toute l’Amérique du Nord, n’est-ce pas?Par chance, Duncan et moi purent également passer quelque temps avec le fameux John Twist de la University Motors.Malheureusement, il y a eu quelques pépins. Mardi, Bill, Diana et moi, Ian Worsnip, Arthur Hakoyan et Susan Bélanger sommes partis vers le parc de petroglyphes au nord de Peterborough: ce parc a le plus grand nombre de reliefs sculptés précolombiens (pétroglyphes) au Canada, doncdes tortues, serpents, oiseaux, êtres humains et plus encore. Nous n’y sommes jamais arrivés! Vingt minutes après le départ, ma voiture a flanché. Je me suis rendu en bord de route près d’une ferme, où le fermier et sa femme nous ont offert de l’eau et leurs sanitaires. Nous avons pris nos chaises du coffre et nous sommes assis à l’ombre d’une arbre pendant que Ian, Arthur et moi jouions dans l’auto.... Arthur a remplacé la pompe à essence avec celle qu’il a trouvé dans sa voiture.. En vain! Comme nous n’avons pu identifier le problème j’ai dû faire remorquer 45 minutes (merci, CAA!) vers un garage de Lindsay doncle nom apparaissait dans le guide NAMGBR. Sauf que le garagiste Charlie n’avait aucunes piècespour l’auto! Lelendemain, Ian, Arthur, Bill et moi nous sommes rendus à Lindsay et c’est grâce à Ian, qui avait un kit complet d’allumage, que Charlie pu agir. Ensuite, vivement une bière froide au pub! Deux heures plus tard, le problème n’était toujours pas réglé au garage. Nous avons alors fait une vidéo-conférence avec mon ami et meilleur copain MG Joe Sfeir qui indiqua à Charlie comment bien installer les pointes. Mission accomplie!! Merci Joe! Puis, retour vers Peterborough. N’est-ce pas super d’avoir de tels amis MG?Le lendemain matin, après le banquet de la veille, Diana et moi avons suivi Duncan et Nathalie dans leur camion, qui remorquait leur championne de merveille dorée vers Hudson, où nous sommes arrivés sans incident... Merci à tous nos amis MG avec qui nous avons eu du bon temps à Peterborough et à ceux qui nous ont aidé à sortir d’un embouteillage!
